Michael's 75th birthday is on Sunday 11th January 2009. He will be conducting a very special concert on that day at the Bedford Corn Exchange, in aid of the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation.

As a birthday present for Michael, we are drawing together a special Invitation Orchestra of people who have passed through his hands in the Youth Orchestra and the BBC Training Orchestra and are now playing professionally or at a professional standard. See below if you are such a player and would like to take part.

The programme will be Britten's Variations on a Theme of Purcell (Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra); Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 and Elgar's Enigma Variations.

The soloist is John Lill, who has a long association with Michael since performing with him in the Proms just after he won the Tchaikovsky Prize in 1970.

Taking part ...

MICHAEL ROSE’S 75th BIRTHDAY CONCERT NEEDS YOU!

Were you a member of the BBC TRAINING ORCHESTRA (1968-72) or the BEDFORDSHIRE COUNTY YOUTH ORCHESTRA (1972 onwards)?

We’re looking for ex-members of these two orchestras, who are now playing professionally or at a professional standard, to play in a special invitation orchestra for a concert to celebrate Michael’s 75th on Sunday, 11th January 2009 at Bedford Corn Exchange.

Rehearsal and concert on the same day. Programme to be announced. Food and lashings of cake provided.

If you would like to take part, please click on the link button abovev left to fill in a form.

If you have any queries, please contact us by e-mail or call 01234 714959 for more details.

Update: 1st September 08

We have had a great response to our call for orchestral players. As of 1st September, we currently need:

1 flute

1 oboe

3 clarinets

Violins

Violas

Cellos

Double basses.

Note: we can accommodate quite a lot of string players.

If you're playing at a high standard but not currently working full-time as a player, do still contact us. Perhaps you've taken a break to have a family or you're concentrating on teaching but still playing at a high level.

We're sorry this isn't a general re-union concert that everyone can take part in, but we may try to organise one if this goes well. Come and join us in the audience instead!
